Lacrosse Bucs start season with 1-1 mark; earn 9-3 win over University

Upshur County’s Sept. 14-20 sports calendar features local golf, volleyball, cross country, soccer, football and tennis. Buckhannon-Upshur and West Virginia Wesleyan teams compete throughout the week at home and on the road.

Buckhannon-Upshur’s five-game unbeaten streak ended with a 2-0 loss to Huntington, as Aidan Garmestani scored twice. The Bucs led in shots and corners and played a man up late, but couldn’t capitalize.

Buckhannon-Upshur placed three runners in the top 12 and scored 73 points to finish second at the Chick-fil-A Invitational. Gwendolyn Rogosky led the Lady Bucs in sixth, followed by Isabella Bowers in eighth and Chloe Lewis in 11th.

Mitchell Whitley led Buckhannon-Upshur with a 24th-place finish as the Buccaneers placed ninth among 17 teams at the Chick-fil-A Invitational. B-U returns Saturday for the Adidas Challenge in North Carolina.

West Virginia Wesleyan opened its cross-country season against Division I competition at the Robert Morris Colonial Invitational. Kent Niland led the eighth-place men, while Lindsey Dillon paced the women, who did not record a team score.

Firefighters and community members discussed Upshur County’s proposed fire fee increase at a recent Q&A. How could it be used? Would it address manpower needs? Is the $10/year increase enough? The measure will appear on the November 3 general election ballot.
