Josh Spencer named interim head men’s soccer coach

BUCKHANNON — West Virginia Wesleyan College Director of Athletics Randy Tenney named Josh Spencer interim head coach of the WVWC men’s soccer team on Monday (April 25).

Spencer returned to Buckhannon in the fall of 2021 as an assistant coach under Gavin Donaldson. The Nottingham, England native played under Donaldson from 2014 to 2017 and captained the 2017 team that defeated Charleston 2-1 to capture the MEC Championship.

“Returning to my alma mater in a coaching capacity is very special,” said Spencer. “To be asked to lead this program is truly a privilege and I feel honored to be able to carry on Coach Donaldson’s legacy. I’m keen to continue to drive the program forward and am very grateful to Randy Tenney and the college for the opportunity.”

Spencer takes over for Gavin Donaldson, who led the Bobcat soccer program for 31 years and amassed over 400 victories. Donaldson passed away in March 2022.

A national search will begin immediately for the filling of the permanent position.
