Glenville State College PBL students hold dress for success workshop

GLENVILLE, W.Va. – Last month, members of Glenville State College’s Phi Beta Lambda (PBL) organization held a Dress for Success workshop for fellow students. The workshop was an opportunity for attendees to hear about professional dress, resume and interviewing skills, have a professional headshot taken for LinkedIn, and more.

Several students attended the workshop and heard from Dr. Gary Arbogast, a Professor of Economics at GSC, Jamie Paulhamus, Career Services Advisor with the College’s Academic Success Center, and Dustin Crutchfield, the College’s Director of Marketing and Public Relations. Arbogast discussed skills for job interviews and gave students the opportunity for one-on-one mock interviews. Paulhamus took students through the job search process, discussed what to look for in job descriptions, and gave tips on how to prepare a cover letter and resume. Crutchfield discussed resources available to students for dressing professionally, including access to the campus Career Closet, a free on-campus repository of clothing for students. Throughout the event, attendees were also able to have a free professional headshot taken by the College’s Creative Director, Kristen Cosner.

“I want to thank everyone who came out to our workshop,” said Marshawn Kelly, current PBL President. “We hope that all of the attendees learned vital information that they can use to become successful in their own careers.”

“The learning experience and knowledge gained from this workshop will help those students with little or no work experience the ability to create a resume and the skills necessary for the interview process and the ability to dress for success,” said PBL member Charles E. Gordon II.

“With the pandemic causing many students to be limited on career networking opportunities, PBL members worked hard gathering donations and other resources to organize this workshop to provide students with an opportunity to improve their resumes, gain experience being interviewed, and have a professional photo for LinkedIn accounts which is used for networking. We also wanted to help students save money by utilizing the Career Closet on campus and the raffle drawing. We hope that students enjoyed themselves as they became better prepared for their dream job,” said Sabrina Gonzalez, current PBL Vice President.

Gonzales reminds students that the support does not end with the workshop.

“If students would like to practice their interviewing skills, they can reach out to Dr. Arbogast, Dr. Kevin Cain, or Dr. Kandas Queen in the Department of Business to set up a time for a mock interview session. I encourage anyone to take advantage of their advice and assistance,” she said.

PBL is the college-level equivalent of the Future Business Leaders of America groups that are often found in high schools throughout the country. The organization is dedicated to inspiring and developing the next generation of leaders by preparing its members for careers in business and business-related fields.
