Glenville State College Land Resources students receive scholarships

GLENVILLE, WV – Two Glenville State College (GSC) Land Resources students have received scholarships from different organizations.

Cora Hedrick received the Frank Santamour Scholarship from the Mid-Atlantic Chapter of the International Society of Arboriculture.

A junior from Marlinton, West Virginia, Hedrick is focusing her studies on Natural Resource Management with a concentration in Forest Technology.

“I am really excited and grateful to be awarded this scholarship from such an awesome organization! It’s a really good feeling to know my hard work and effort from the last couple years is starting to pay off, but I undoubtedly wouldn’t have received anything for it, if it wasn’t for professors constantly sending and thinking of opportunities like this one,” Hedrick said.

The Mid-Atlantic Chapter of the International Society of Arboriculture’s (MAC-ISA) Frank Santamour Scholarship is a $1,250 award designed to recognize promising students studying arboriculture/urban forestry who have a genuine interest in a career in arboriculture. The scholarship was established through the generosity of the MAC-ISA to honor the memory of Dr. Santamour, a past President and charter member of the MAC-ISA.

The MAC-ISA is a not-for-profit organization for arborists, urban foresters, and others involved in tree care. The chapter area includes the District of Columbia, Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia.

Lexi Pletcher received the Arnold Spitzen Memorial Forestry Scholarship from the West Virginia Christmas Tree Growers Association.

A junior from Sutton, West Virginia, Pletcher is focusing her studies on Natural Resource Management with a concentration in Forest Technology.

“I feel lucky to be able to pursue a career in the field of Natural Resources because I love spending time outdoors. I am very grateful for receiving this scholarship and will continue to work hard to be a good student and earn my degree,” Pletcher said.

The WV Christmas Tree Growers Association (WVCTGA) Arnold Spitzen Memorial Forestry Scholarship is a $500 award that is given to students in memory of Arnold Spitzen. Spitzen was a longtime board member and President of the WVCTGA and managed a Christmas tree farm in Jefferson County for many years. The scholarship is available annually to a forestry major and is awarded based on academic accomplishments and need. Recipients can be awarded the scholarship for a maximum of two years.
