Fewer COVID-19 tests, cases and deaths reported in West Virginia on Monday

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources announced Monday that 532 new cases of COVID-19 have been identified in the Mountain State.

Two days of far lower case totals has brought the average number of new cases daily to levels not seen since mid-November. However, fewer than 5,000 test results were returned, pushing the positivity percentage to over 8% on Monday.

Locally, new cases were reported in Upshur (3), Barbour (3), Lewis (1), Randolph (11) and Webster (1) counties. A total of 245 cases are currently active in Upshur County, according to the DHHR.

The DHHR, however, continues to underreport nearly 350 cases in Upshur County, according to numbers released by the local health department.

Four additional deaths have been attributed to the disease, according to the DHHR – a 78-year old female from Fayette County, a 68-year old male from Jackson County, a 94-year old male from Fayette County and a 56-year old female from Cabell County.

“The West Virginia DHHR reports as of January 25, 2021, there have been 1,842,725 total confirmatory laboratory results received for COVID-19, with 115,839 total cases and 1,899 total deaths,” according to a press release.

About 24,365 West Virginia cases remain active, according DHHR data. Of the cases that are no longer active, 89,575 people have recovered and 1,899 have died. The daily percent positive was 8.43%.

A total of 40,258 people have been fully vaccinated for COVID-19 in West Virginia, meaning they have received both doses of the vaccine, the DHHR said.
