Davis Medical Center named to Top 100 hospital list

Elkins, W.Va. – Davis Medical Center is West Virginia’s only hospital to receive national recognition as a 2022 Top 100 Rural & Community Hospital. Officials learned in February that the hospital had once again achieved the honor.

“We were thrilled to learn of the recognition,” said Davis Health System CEO Vance Jackson.  “To say the least, it has been a challenging couple of years for healthcare, and despite the pressures placed on our providers, nurses and employees, we did what we do best, take care of our community.  To maintain the designation of being a Top 100 Hospital nationally is a testament to the hardworking men and women of Davis Medical Center.”

According to Jackson, DMC’s highest scores on the Index were in Value Performance.

“DMC scored exceptionally well in patient outcomes and, cost and charge metrics.  This translates to high quality medical care delivered at an affordable cost,” said Jackson. “It is consistent with our rankings in the Medicare Hospital Value Based Purchasing (VBP) Impact Analysis.  We consistently rank among the best hospitals in the U.S. and West Virginia in the Efficiency & Cost Reduction Domain.”

In Medicare’s last published report, 4th Quarter 2020, DMC ranked 1st in the nation (1 of 2,511) and 1st in the state (1 of 21) for keeping patient cost low.

Davis Medical Center made the Top 10 list because of its performance among other rural hospitals throughout the United States.  Each year, rural hospitals are analyzed through the Hospital Strength INDEX, the healthcare industry’s most comprehensive and objective assessment of rural hospital performance in the nation.  2022 is the fifth time DMC has made the Top 100 List, and in fact made the Top 20 in 2018.

Compiled by The Chartis Center for Rural Health, this annual program honors outstanding performance among the nation’s rural hospitals based on the results of the Chartis Rural Hospital Performance INDEX™.  You can find the full Top 100 list here.

Top 100 hospitals excel in managing risk, achieving higher quality, securing better patient outcomes, increasing patient satisfaction, and operation at a lower cost than their peers.

“Despite unprecedented adversity rural providers continue to display resiliency and a steadfast commitment to their communities,” said Michael Topchik, National Leader, The Chartis Center for Rural Health. “Honoring the Top 100 is one of the highpoints of our year. We are delighted to recognize the exceptional performance and innovation of this year’s recipients, particularly in light of the extraordinary challenges facing America’s rural health safety net.”

Over the course of the last 12 years, the INDEX has established itself as the industry’s most comprehensive and objective assessment of rural hospital performance. Leveraging publicly available data, the INDEX is trusted by rural hospitals, health systems with rural footprints, hospital associations and state offices of rural health across the country to measure and monitor performance across a variety of areas impacting hospital operations and finance.

“On behalf of our Board of Directors and leadership team, we want to thank all of our employees and providers for their unwavering dedication towards meeting our mission, “to bring Better Health to Life.”
