COVID-19 cases surge across West Virginia as contagious Delta variant takes hold

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources announced Wednesday that 2,848 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in the Mountain State. That’s an increase of 263 since the last report.

Locally, COVID-19 cases are active in Upshur (36), Barbour (21), Lewis (47), Randolph (36) and Webster (26) counties. All five counties reported an increase in cases in the last 24 hours.

Two additional deaths have been attributed to the disease, according to the DHHR – an 86-year old male from Morgan County and a 75-year old male from Cabell County.

“The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR) reports as of August 4, 2021, there have been 3,144,242 total confirmatory laboratory results received for COVID-19, with 168,330 total cases and 2,956 deaths,” according to a press release.

The daily percent positive was 5.72%.

A total of 882,532 people have been fully vaccinated for COVID-19 in West Virginia, meaning they have received both doses of the vaccine, the DHHR said. That’s about 49% of the state.
