Conquer cabin fever with Fish Hawk Acres’ ‘Old Man Winter’ dinner Sunday

This Osso Bucco will be the main course at Sunday's market meal at Fish Hawk Acres in Buckhannon. Reservations required! Call 304-473-7741.

BUCKHANNON — Fish Hawk Acres wants to give people a compelling reason to brave the winter weather and shake off the cabin fever that can come with the month of January.

So, on Sunday, Jan. 27, they’re tempting area taste buds with the Old Man Winter Dinner.

Fish Hawk Acres has been hosting monthly-themed dinners, so for the month of January, owner Dale Hawkins said they wanted to make comfort food while also using seasonal ingredients.

“With these dinners, we’re trying to highlight food of that season,” Hawkins said. “We will have osso bucco and Swiss chard, which likes to grow really well in the winter, fall and spring.”

The meal will be three courses and will cost $35 per person.

So, what’s on the menu? Rainbow Swiss chard and wild rice salad with toasted pumpkin seeds, tart cherries and a blood orange vinaigrette. The second course will be osso bucco with risotto Milanese (veal shanks braised with vegetables and wine).

The meal will finish with chocolate souffle with Bailey’s Irish Cream anglaise.

Hawkins said wine and beer will be offered separately from the dinner.

Reservations are required and the meal will begin at 2 p.m. Call the market at 304-473-7741 to make a reservation or get more information about the dinner.

Hawkins said they have enough room for about 20 more people before they reach capacity.

Sous chef Jon Hicks said he’s glad they are giving people in Buckhannon a reason to come to Main Street.

“I think it’s great that people can come downtown to Main Street … rather than going over to a chain (restaurant) or going to Clarksburg,” Hicks said.

Hawkins said the dinner is a good chance to get out after a particularly cold week.

“People are probably getting cabin fever this week after being in this little cold snap,” Hawkins said. “It’ll be nice to get out on a Sunday afternoon and visit with other people.”

Fish Hawk will continue the monthly dinners in February with a Valentine’s Day theme.
