BUCKHANNON – The Upshur County Commission is accepting letters of interest to fill the vacancy on the commission.

The commission opened their Sept. 8 meeting by having a moment of silence in honor of Terry Cutright, a longtime commissioner who passed away unexpectedly a week prior. The commissioners and several other people who worked with Cutright expressed how much they would miss him in a previous My Buckhannon article.

Commissioners also announced the vacancy left by Cutright on the three-person commission and invited county residents who would like to fill that opening to submit letters of interest. The commission will appoint someone to fill the vacancy, and that appointment will last until the certification of the November 2024 General Election, commissioners said.

Commissioner Sam Nolte said they would have 30 days from the time of the vacancy to choose an appointee, but they will also be permitted to choose a suitable individual before the allotted 30 days. Upshur County Clerk Carol Smith said the commissioners would have until Oct. 1 to choose a person. She said interested individuals have to make sure they haven’t changed their political parties within the last 60 days and must be in the Republican party from District 2.

Letters may be sent or dropped off at the Upshur County Administrative Annex, 91 W. Main St., Suite 101 in Buckhannon.
