Class of 2020 selects B-UHS football stadium as set for graduation and more notes on the school year’s end

Editor’s note: The following is a news release from Upshur County Schools Superintendent Dr. Sara Stankus.

BUCKHANNON – On April 21, 2020, Governor Justice declared that West Virginia students will not be returning to school buildings for the remainder of the 2019 – 2020 school year.

Per the governor’s directive, we will continue to educate and feed our students as we have been doing until the end of the school year. Governor Justice is also working to get the state back to work and public services restored. And as a school system, we are beginning to prepare our school buildings for closure and summer maintenance.

School administrators and teachers are developing a plan for students to return devices, textbooks and other materials. Students will have opportunity to pick up personal items, or they can be delivered on the bus. These plans will come from individual schools within the next week. Look for this communication on your school’s social media.

Grade cards will be mailed home on May 22. Parents can check their student’s grades on Live Grades. As per guidance of the West Virginia Department of Education, no student’s grade will decline as a result of remote learning. Our students will not be penalized in this pandemic! Upshur County Schools will continue to provide remote, continuous learning opportunities for our students outside traditional classroom teaching environments until the end of the academic year.

Important food delivery dates. We will continue to deliver multi-day meal packets to the bus stop.

Dates for meal delivery will be:

  • Monday, April 27, buses will leave at noon
  • Tuesday, May 5, buses will leave at noon
  • Tuesday, May 12, buses will leave at noon
  • Tuesday, May 19, buses will leave at noon
  • Tuesday, May 26, buses will leave at noon

Curbside Supper will be served at Buckhannon-Upshur Middle School. These will be single meals served each Friday until the end of the school year.

Curbside pickup dates:

  • Friday, May 1- 4:00-5:30
  • Friday, May 8, 4:00-5:30
  • Friday, May 15, 4:00-5:30
  • Friday, May 22, 4:00-5:30

We are working on plans for graduation and the survey results have been compiled. Class of 2020 students overwhelmingly reported their preference to have their graduation at Buckhannon-Upshur High School at the Freal “Red” Crites Memorial Football Stadium. Final details will be approved through Upshur County Board of Education, B-UHS Administration and Upshur County Health Department.

We hope you are safe and healthy during this challenging time. We truly appreciate the deep commitment and willingness from our families to work with the schools in order to address the needs of students in this unfolding educational challenge. This pandemic has proven that it truly “takes a village” to educate our children.
