Carpenter Crunch Time Week 7; WVU and ISU to battle for Big XII lead

BUCKHANNON – As we head into week seven, I am going to attempt to give my mid-year picks on who I see hoisting the state’s four class football championships.

In Class AAAA, if you say anything else other than Martinsburg you should be committed. I really think there are only two other teams that might challenge the Bulldogs and that would certainly be Spring Mills and maybe Huntington.

In Class, it has to be Bridgeport and Fairmont Senior. I will lean to Bridgeport for winning it all. I would also give a nod to Princeton if those teams falter and maybe Herbert Hoover as well.

Class AA is wide open. I really don’t see a clear-cut favorite yet. Frankfort, Roane County, Williamstown, Wayne and Westside are all in the mix. I will go with Williamstown.

I have to admit I don’t follow much of what happens in Single A, but Tug Valley, Wahama, Tucker County and Valley Wetzel would be my top four to win it all in that division. Let’s go with Tug Valley to win it all.

Now onto the important stuff…the My Buckhannon standings, which look like this.

Name   Week   Overall
Brian      5-2       34-8
Duane   6-1       34-8
Katie      7-0       27-15
Monica 5-2       24-18

Katie had the big week going 7-0 while I caught up to Brian overall going 6-1 while he checked in at 5-2 along with Monica. Going to be a close finish to our competition.

As I said last week, we had to toss out the WVU game for our readers as It was incorrectly listed, so we moved our tiebreaker game to the Marshall-Appy State game. While we had several readers go 6-0, we wound up with a tie after checking out tiebreaking scores. Our winners this week were ROB KIMBLE and BILL BENNETT, who both picked 65 points. Congratulations to both.

Now onto our games this week:

Buckhannon-Upshur (0-6) at Lewis County (2-3)

Certainly, a winnable game for the Bucs, but it just seems like this team is snake-bitten. It would be nice for something positive to happen to this team.

Duane: Lewis County; Brian: Buckhannon-Upshur; Katie: Buckhannon-Upshur

Elkins (5-1) at North Marion (4-1)

Elkins is sitting pretty at 5-1 and ranked seventh in the state, but things are about to get real over the next three weeks. They are at North Marion, then home with Fairmont Senior, then at Herbert Hoover. That 5-1 mark could be 5-4 really quick.

Duane: North Marion; Brian: North Marion; Katie: North Marion

Iowa State (5-0) at West Virginia (3-2)

A huge game for WVU and Neal Brown. His seat has cooled but will warm back up if they lose this game. Iowa State has been the surprise of the Big 12 thus far as the conference’s highest rated team being ranked 11th this week. The winner will be atop of the Big 12 standings next week.

Duane: Iowa State; Brian: Iowa State; Katie: West Virginia

The Final Four:

Bridgeport (6-0) at Parkersburg South (4-1)

Duane: Bridgeport; Brian: Bridgeport; Katie: Bridgeport

Wheeling Park (4-2) at Fairmont Senior (6-0)

Duane: Wheeling Park; Brian: Fairmont Senior; Katie: Wheeling Park

Fairmont State (2-3) at West Virginia Wesleyan (0-5)

Duane: Fairmont State; Brian: Fairmont State; Katie: Fairmont State

Marshall (3-2) at Georgia Southern (3-2)

Duane: Georgia Southern; Brian: Georgia Southern; Katie: Georgia Southern
