Carpenter Crunch Time Week 2: Hoping for better days ahead

BUCKHANNON – Anybody for a mulligan to the start of the football season? It certainly was a tough week last week for B-U, West Virginia Wesleyan and West Virginia University.

Wesleyan is off this week, and WVU gets to play a patsy, but the Bucs are stuck with a team that made it to the second round of the playoffs last year in the Philip Barbour Colts.

I guess on the bright side, there is nowhere to go but up for all three teams.

I think my biggest disappointment was WVU. I didn’t expect them to win that game against Penn State, but it’s how they lost it that aggravated me. Again, just too many self-inflected wounds and things that just don’t make sense. I am not even a Neal Brown hater, but at what point do these mistakes end?

In our reader contest, we had two entrants that posted perfect 7-0 records — Levi Bender and Hank Ellis — but it was Hank that won the tiebreaker of total points of the WVU-PSU game with 41 points to Levi picking 35. (The final was 34-12 for 46 total points).

And for our readers, you still have time to get your picks in this week through our online form. It’s totally free, and the winner will receive a special small prize. We accept entries before the 7 p.m. kickoff of high school games on Friday. Click here to make your picks for this week’s game list.

Now for an update on the My Buckhannon contest.

Our standings:

  • Brian 7-0
  • Duane 6-1
  • Katie 6-1
  • Monica 3-4

Brian got off to a perfect start, while Katie and I both missed one game. Katie misfired on the WVU game, while I got the West Virginia Wesleyan game wrong. Not to pour it on the Bobcats, but I really thought they could beat a team starting their third season of varsity football. I had Post and switched my pick late last week. Monica already has some catching up to do after week one.

Now, let’s get down to business and onto our games this week.

Philip Barbour (1-0) at Buckhannon-Upshur (0-1)

Win or lose, I think it will be interesting to see how Buckhannon-Upshur responds to last week and how they play this week. Philip Barbour certainly isn’t Bridgeport, but they are still a pretty good team.

Duane: Philip Barbour; Brian: Philip Barbour: Katie; Buckhannon-Upshur; Monica: Philip Barbour

Bridgeport (1-0) at Morgantown (1-0)

A true toss-up if there ever was one. Morgantown went on the road and beat a pretty good Parkersburg team last week. I think Bridgeport might have the better team, but I am leaning toward the Mohigans winning the game. Certainly wouldn’t shock me to see the game go either way.

Duane: Morgantown; Brian: Morgantown; Katie: Morgantown; Monica: Bridgeport

Albany (1-0) at West Virginia (0-1)

Albany beat Long Island last week by a 27-21 score and are ranked No. 16 in the FCS. Still, if this is anything other than a blowout for WVU, then changes need to be made.

Duane: West Virginia; Brian: West Virginia; Katie: West Virginia; Monica: Albany

The Final Four:

Fairmont Senior (1-0) at Robert C. Byrd (1-0)

Duane: Fairmont Senior; Brian: Fairmont Senior; Katie: Robert C. Byrd; Monica: Robert C. Byrd

University (0-0) at Parkersburg South (0-1)

Duane: Parkersburg South; Brian: University; Katie: Parkersburg South; Monica: Parkersburg South

Texas (1-0) at Michigan (1-0)

Duan: Michigan; Brian: Texas; Katie: Michigan; Monica: Texas

Marshall (1-0) at Virginia Tech (0-1)

Duane: Virginia Tech; Brian: Virginia Tech; Katie: Virginia Tech; Monica: Marshall
