Capito, Manchin announce funding for advanced nursing education

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senators Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) and Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.), members of the Appropriations Committee, today announced a $698,753 grant through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). Funding will support Shepherd University’s Advanced Nursing Education Workforce.

“This funding will help our nurses gain the knowledge and skills to do their best work and help other West Virginians,” said Senator Capito. “Advanced educational opportunities provide the most up-to-date information, procedures, and techniques. Nurses are essential in providing high-quality health care to all West Virginians, and I’m proud to give back to them with this educational opportunity.”

“Nurses are on the front lines in West Virginia – from combatting the opioid epidemic firsthand to serving in rural health centers – they care for West Virginians every day.

It is important for nurses to receive continuing education and training, which is why I have always supported funding for Title VIII Nursing Workforce Development programs in my role on the Senate Appropriations Committee, which funds programs like this one so that nurses are prepared and can bring more pay home for their families throughout their careers,” Senator Manchin said.

“I applaud HHS for investing in West Virginia’s nursing industry, and I will work hard to bring more opportunities like this to all of West Virginia.”
