Canaan Valley Resort offers outdoor discovery, education events in July

Davis, W.Va. – Highlighting the unique flora and fauna of the highest mountain valley in the eastern United States and providing an opportunity for both individuals and families to learn about and explore all the area has to offer, Canaan Valley Resort will host multiple expert-led hikes and educational forums throughout July. 

“We’ve seen great interest from guests in not only exploring Canaan Valley and the surrounding area but also learning about it as well,” said Sam England, Canaan Valley Resort General Manager. “Our July event series focuses on providing guests a more holistic experience; arming them with information so they can better understand, and more fully enjoy, the natural wonders of our region.”

The July event series includes the following:

Mid-Summer Walk Between the Parks, July 10 – The Walk Between the Parks hike is an eight-mile, moderately strenuous hike between Canaan Valley Resort and Blackwater Falls State Parks featuring amazing views of the valley. Pre-registration recommended.

Introduction to Birding, July 17 – Master Naturalist Laura Ceperley will lead a 1-1.5 mile walk through Canaan Valley Resort State Park from 9-11am highlighting different species of birds in their natural habitat.  The event is free and open to the public.

Edible Plants Hike, July 17, July 24 – This two-hour hike (9-11am) through trails, fields and forests of Canaan Valley State Park will introduce participants to techniques for finding and identifying wild plants that are safe to eat. Hikers will also learn how to use trees and plants to build fires, create shelter and for other survival purposes.

Geology Rocks Hike, July 22-23 – Presented by the WV Geological Survey, the Geology Rocks event is a two-part activity featuring an evening presentation (7-9pm) on July 22 explaining and exploring the mysteries of rock and a hike along the Blackwater River Trail on July 23 (9am) showcasing the local geology and topography.

Snakes of West Virginia, July 24 – West Virginia Wildlife Biologist Jim Fregonara will provide a fun and educational overview of the snakes of West Virginia on July 24 (7pm).  Learn how to identify venomous and non-venomous snakes, plus see several live snakes, native to the area, up close.

Yoga Infused Nature Walk, July 31 – Join Master Naturalist Cathy Eiden and “Beach to Peak” Yoga Instructor Sheri Kosh for a relaxing and stimulating excursion on July 31 (9am) combining yoga and a nature walk on the beautiful Blackwater Trail. Guests will learn how to incorporate yoga into their walk without the need for a mat or props while also identifying wildflowers, flora, and fauna. The event is free and open to the public.

Walt Disney Portrayal, July 31 – And for something totally different, join artist James Froemel as he brings history to life through his expert portrayal of Walt Disney! The performance will take place on July 31 from 7-9pm and highlights Disney’s life and his struggles to create his now world-famous animation company. This event, a program of the West Virginia Humanities Council, is free and open to the public.
