Buckhannon Community Theatre to hold auditions in January for ‘The Red Velvet Cake War’

BUCKHANNON — Buckahnnon Community Theatre will kick off its 2023 season with “The Red Velvet Cake War” by Jones, Hope and Wooten. The playwrights are also the writers of “Designing Women,” “The Golden Girls” and “The Savannah Sipping Society.”

In “The Red Velvet Cake War,” the audience will head on down to Sweetgum, Texas, where the Verdeen cousins, Gaynelle Peaches and Jimmie Wyvette are set to hold the Verdeen family reunion, much to the chagrin of their stern Aunt LaMerle. The girls taking charge of the reunion have created a competition to see who can bake the best red velvet cake. All of this happens while Gaynelle is undergoing a mental evaluation after reacting unfavorably to her husband‘s girlfriend.

Be prepared to laugh till your sides hurt as these, plus a few more, wacky characters take stage.

Join Buckhannon Community Theatre for auditions on January 26th and 27th from 6:30 until 8:30 PM at the Colonial Arts Center.

Those who wish to audition should prepare a 2-3 minute comedy monologue and will also be given selected sides from the script to read as well. There are roles for seven women and three men. Actors should be able to portray a person in their mid-30s to mid-40s for the cousins and older for the other roles.

Shows will be May 4-7 at 7 p.m. at the Colonial Arts Center, except for Sundays, when the matinee will be at 2 p.m.
