BOE approves modified personnel list as high school principal position is reposted

BUCKHANNON – The position of Buckhannon-Upshur High School principal has been reposted.

The move comes after the Upshur County Board of Education declined to approve a slate of personnel that included a candidate, H. Randall Roy, a current vice principal at B-UHS, at its meeting Tuesday.

When the Upshur County Board of Education met on Friday in a special virtual session, BOE members voted unanimously to approve the personnel recommendations following a 15-minute executive session — with one notable change.

The personnel items discussed included exactly the same slate of resignations, retirements, those to be hired, those transferring from one position to another within the school system and those wishing to take days off without pay. The only difference was that the name of the candidate for high school principal, Roy, had been struck, as is shown in the attachment below:

During Tuesday’s regular meeting, board members did not approve the original slate of personnel when two BOE members – Kristi Wilkerson and Pat Long – voted ‘nay’ to accepting the entire list of names presented for approval of personnel. You can read about that meeting here.

Following Tuesday’s meeting, board members declined to make any additional comments other than BOE president Dr. Tammy Samples saying the personnel items would be taken up at a future meeting (Friday, March 25).

At the conclusion of Friday’s meeting, My Buckhannon reached out to Upshur County Superintendent of Schools Dr. Sara Lewis Stankus to ask if Upshur County Schools has reposted the job for a principal at Buckhannon-Upshur High School since the current principal Jonathan Pollock will no longer be serving as Principal at B-UHS after June 30, 2022.

Stankus said that the position would be reposted, and the search would begin again for a candidate to fill that position. Stankus said she could not share anything further related to personnel when asked why Roy’s name was stricken from the personnel recommendations.

Roy did not offer any comments when contacted by email by My Buckhannon staff.

Also, during Friday’s special BOE meeting:

  • Members voted unanimously to approve the chaperone list for the March 31 to April 3 B-UHS Band trip to Nashville.
  • Members voted unanimously to approve the proposed purchase of five additional school buses.

The next regular meeting of the Upshur County BOE is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Tuesday, April 5, 2022, at the Buckhannon-Upshur High School Auditorium.
