ELKINS – Preston Bennett broke a school record for the Buckhannon-Upshur Buccaneers in the 100-yard backstroke at a recent road dual meet with the Elkins Tigers.
Bennett had a record-breaking time of 55.69, winning the event and smashing the old mark of 56.24 that was held by Steven Wilson.
Bennett also took first in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 56.97.
The Bucs came up short in the team scoring, however, dropping the dual meet by an 85-68 score.
Also picking up individual wins for the Bucs were Carter Zuliani claiming the 50-yard freestyle (22.99) and Reis Leonard winning the 100-yard breaststroke (1:14.39).
The Bucs won two relay events.
Getting the relay victories were Bennett, Leonard, Zuliani and Owen Caynor in the 200-yard medley (1:52.92) and the quartet of Dmetri Ormeno, Caynor, Leonard and Bennett in the 400-yard freestyle (4:01.29).
The Lady Bucs won eight of their 11 events but still fell to the Tigers by a single point, at 77-76.
They won six individual titles and collected two relay wins.
Picking up individual wins were Cadence Vincent in the 50-yard freestyle (23.91) and the 100-yard butterfly (1:00.33), Alayna Whitehair in the 200-yard IM (2:26.12) and the 100-yard backstroke (1:16.56), Cameron Zuliani in the 100-yard freestyle (56.87) and Abby Loudin in the 100-yard backstroke (1:26.15).
The relay wins belonged to the foursome of Loudin, Whitehair, Zuliani and Vincent in the 200-yard medley (2:07.29) and Whitehair, Lillian Fetty, Zuliani and Vincent in the 200-yard freestyle (1:49.57).
Both teams competed in the Big 10 Championships this past Saturday, and both squads took third place.
