Battle of top conference teams ends in a tie for B-U and East Fairmont

FAIRMONT – There was a wild finish to the contest featuring two of the best teams in the Big 10 Conference when the Buckhannon-Upshur soccer Lady Bucs battled the East Fairmont Bees Tuesday evening.

With the game tied at 2-2, Buckhannon-Upshur’s Kyleigh Keener scored an unassisted goal with under three minutes play to give the Lady Bucs a 3-2 lead and an apparent win.

But the joy was short-lived for the Lady Bucs as less than a minute later they gave up a goal to Brooklyn Shupe as the game ended in a 3-3 deadlock.

B-U struck first in the game when Mallory Hughes scored on a penalty kick in the 19th minute.

East Fairmont tied the game at 1-1 in the 36th minute when Hailey Hauser scored with an assist going to Alivia Barr.

The game went into the intermission at 1-1.

East Fairmont took a 2-1 lead in the 46th minute on a Shupe goal with the assist going to Hauser.

B-U fought back to tie the game at 2-2 in the 53rd minute on an unassisted goal by Grace Queen before the game settled in before the wild finish.

“We played well all around and I am very proud of the effort our team gave to come back and take the lead after being down a goal,” noted Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Jason Piacente.

The Lady Bucs owned a 6-5 lead in shots-on-goal but trailed in corner kicks by that same 6-5 margin.

B-U was called for seven fouls while East Fairmont was guilty of five.

Buckhannon-Upshur keeper Kyndal Davis stopped two shots while East Fairmont goalie Addison Thomas made three saves

The tie left East Fairmont with a 10-1-1 record overall and a 6-0-1 mark in the Big 10 Conference while Buckhannon-Upshur is now 7-3-2 on the year and 5-0-2 in the Big 10.

The Lady Bucs will be back in action Thursday hosting Robert C. Byrd in a conference clash at 5:30 p.m.
