Basketball Lady Bucs never get it going in 50-42 setback to Trojans

ROMNEY – The Buckhannon-Upshur Lady Bucs had trouble scoring in their road contest with the Hampshire Trojans Friday night in a 50-42 setback.

The final score made the game appear a lot closer than it actually was as B-U trailed by 22 early in the fourth quarter before closing the game on an 8-0 run in the final 74 seconds.

The Lady Bucs scored just 21 points in the first quarters of action, matching those 21 points in the final eight minutes.

B-U was down 6-0 before Alyssa Abel finally put them on the scoreboard with a lay-up 2:31 into the contest.

A short jumper by Harley Dean left the Lady Bucs down by just three, at 8-5, but Hampshire closed the quarter on a 7-2 run for a 15-7 lead after one quarter,

Hampshire started the second quarter on an 8-0 run before a Casadie Lahman lay-up ended the B-U drought leaving them down 23-9 with four minutes showing in the canto.

A basket from Dean from underneath made it 23-11 but Hampshire scored seven straight for a 30-11 advantage with 1:09 left in the first half.

Gabby Parke turned in an old-fashioned three-point play with one second in the half to make it a 32-15 game in favor of the Trojans.

B-U managed just two field goals from Abel and a free throw from Parke and Abel in the third quarter as they trailed by a 41-21 margin heading into the final eight minutes of action.

Down by 22, at 45-23 a minute into the fourth quarter, B-U went on an 11-0 run over the next four minutes but still trailed by a 45-34 score with 4:15 remaining.

Hampshire answered with a 5-1 run keeping the Lady Bucs down by 15, at 50-35, with 1:28 left, before the Lady Bucs closed the game out with an 8-0 run.

Hampshire, which was led by Della Knight’s double-double of 13 points and 12 rebounds, improved to 3-5 on the season.

B-U was led by Parke’s 19 points.

Buckhanon-Upshur won the rebounding battle by a 33-30 margin as Abel had a team-high seven rebounds.

The loss was the fourth in a row for the Lady Bucs as they dropped to 1-4 on the year.

The Lady Bucs will now be off until Thursday, Jan. 4 when they host North Marion for a 7:30 p.m. start.
