Baseball ‘Cats drop road doubleheader to Charleston

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The West Virginia Wesleyan baseball team lost the final two games of their four-game set with the University of Charleston Sunday, getting swept by the Golden Eagles. UC recorded nine hits in both games and only allowed six total hits between the two games.

Game 1
Charleston jumped on the Bobcats early, hitting a one-run single and a bases clearing triple to take a 4-0 lead after just one inning. The Golden Eagles added to their lead with a two-run shot in the bottom of the third, extending their lead to six. WVWC recorded their first hits and run in the top of the fourth, kicking off the inning with a double by Jack Tilton and Thatcher Poteat singling to bring Tilton in.

UC answered in the bottom of the fourth, plating another run on a one-run single to right. The UC pitching staff finished out strong, only allowing one baserunner in the last three innings. Three strikeouts in the top of the sixth and consecutive outs in the top of the seventh closed out game one with the Golden Eagles winning 7-1.

Clay Hale and Carter Rust led Charleston with 3three RBIs apiece and Tyler Dellerman aided by knocking in one run. Dwayne Sumier picked up the win after four innings, one run (earned), one hit and five strikeouts.

Poteat had the lone RBI for the Bobcats with one of the two hits. Tilton recorded the other hit for Wesleyan. Broderick Rohrbaugh took the loss, going three innings and allowing six runs (five earned) on seven hits and three walks.

Game 2
The Golden Eagles started off game two hot as well, blasting a three-run home rub in the bottom of the first. UC put more runs up on the board in the bottom of the second on a one-run single and a two-run single, making it 6-0 after two innings of play. After holding Wesleyan hitless in the top of the third Charleston plated a run on a one-run single to right and another run on a triple to deep center in the bottom of the third.

WVWC finally got into the hit column in the top of the 4th as Sam Ingram and Tilton singled back-to-back and Poteat brought Ingram in with a single. Later in the inning, Cole Shearer plated Tilton with a single to cut it to 8-2. A single and wild pitch put the UC lead back at eight in the bottom of the fourth. The Bobcat bats were silent for the rest of the game as Charleston capped off the four-game sweep with a 10-2 victory.

Andre Martinez led UC with three RBIs with Drew Klaserner and Hector Carreon-Herra added two RBIs each. Dan Sykes pitched four innings of relief, getting the win after striking out five and only allowing one hit and one walk.

Shearer and Poteat both picked up a RBI for the Bobcats. Hunter Eplin surrendered eight runs (all earned) on seven hits and three walks in three innings of work, taking the loss.
