Active COVID-19 cases in West Virginia dropped by about 20% in January

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources announced Sunday morning that 661 new cases of COVID-19 have been identified in the Mountain State.

Locally, new cases were reported in Upshur (9), Barbour (6), Lewis (6) and Webster (9) counties. A total of 200 cases are currently active in Upshur County, according to the DHHR.

West Virginia saw its first monthly drop in active cases since June, decreasing by about 20% in total. However, case levels are still far above what the state reported throughout the fall.

Nine additional deaths have been attributed to the disease, according to the DHHR:

  • an 85-year old female from Kanawha County,
  • a 47-year old male from Pleasants County,
  • a 92-year old female from Kanawha County,
  • a 90-year old female from Kanawha County,
  • a 57-year old male from Wood County,
  • a 59-year old female from Berkeley County,
  • a 74-year old female from Boone County,
  • a 74-year old male from Marion County,
  • a 76-year old male from Jefferson County.

“The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources reports as of January 31, 2021, there have been 1,921,654 total confirmatory laboratory results received for COVID-19, with 121,001 total cases and 2,024 total deaths,” according to a press release.

About 21,195 West Virginia cases remain active, according DHHR data. Of the cases that are no longer active, 97,782 people have recovered and 2,024 have died. The daily percent positive was 6.49%.

A total of 68,230 people have been fully vaccinated for COVID-19 in West Virginia, meaning they have received both doses of the vaccine, the DHHR said.
