BUCKHANNON, W.Va. — Members of the West Virginia Wesleyan College Class of 1969 have launched the Latin American International Scholarship.  The scholarship is named in honor and memory of Daniel Stein, who was a victim of the tragic Pittsburgh Tree of Life Synagogue mass murder in October.

Stein, a 1969 graduate of Wesleyan, was a Spanish major and Latin American studies minor and spent several months as a missionary in Mexico.  The Pittsburgh native also served as a faculty assistant and participated in intramurals. 

After graduating from Wesleyan, Stein worked in business and as a substitute teacher, was active in community service, and was well known as a leader in the Pittsburgh Jewish community.

“We are delighted that Dan’s classmates have decided to honor his life in this way,” said Bob Skinner ’75, vice president for advancement.  “Dan’s life exemplified Wesleyan’s mission and he had a great passion for Latin America. Wesleyan has a number of students who have interest in pursuing international travel, particularly in Latin American countries.  Unfortunately, the lack of financial resources sometimes prevents students from fulfilling this dream. This scholarship will provide an opportunity for at least one Wesleyan student to benefit from a life-changing experience every year.”
