Carpenter Crunch Time Week 4: Is Jimbo really the answer for WVU?

BUCKHANNON – Well, Neal Brown’s seat is officially hot again.

I have always been in the mindset if you plan to get rid of a coach, you better have someone ready to take over.

The seemingly popular choice of Mountaineer fans to replace Brown (if and when he is let go) is Jimbo Fisher. If you are one of those people, that’s fine: you are, of course, allowed to have your opinion on the matter, but my question is — why?

I will admit that Fisher is probably the highest profile name the Mountaineers could get as coach, and it might even provide an uptick in recruiting for WVU, now, this is the part I don’t get.

At FSU under Fisher, they had the worst Academic Progress Rate of any Power Five program, and they were on the verge of an automatic post-season ban under Fisher. On the field, during his last season at FSU, they went 5-6. (FSU finished 7-6 that season).

At Texas A&M, a school that has more money and a stronger recruiting base than WVU ever will, he finished the last three years of his five-year tenure with a paltry 19-15 record. Not exactly the stuff legends are made of. As he approaches the age of 59 on Oct. 9, I have to wonder if Jimbo’s best days as a head coach are behind him.

It seems like WVU fans want to live on past glory when it comes to hiring a new coach or someone who has ties to the state. Why handcuff your program like that?

Neal probably has to go, but I don’t think Jimbo is the right person to replace him. And don’t get me started on why Rich Rodriguez isn’t the right person, either.

Now, let’s look at this week’s My Buckhannon standings.

Name   Week   Overall
Brian      6-1       18-3
Duane  7-0       18-3
Katie      4-3       13-8
Monica 4-3       11-10

I went a perfect 7-0 while Brian went 6-1 so we are now tied for the year with identical 18-3 marks. Katie and Monica both went 4-3 last week; Katie holds down third place with a 13-8 mark, while Monica is 11-10.

So, I goofed big time two weeks ago when I was tabulating our readers’ picks. I declared Rob Kimble our winner, but Steve Hollen also went 7-0 two weeks ago and actually won the tiebreaker over Rob. So, we will be sending out gift certificates to both readers and my apologies to my old Friday night running mate Steve for the blunder.

This week, our winner was Marsha Lee, who went a perfect 7-0. Congrats to Marsha for winning our $20 gift certificate. If you haven’t made your picks this week, please do so here. You have until Friday at 7 p.m. to make your selections.

Now on to this week’s games.

Elkins (2-1) at Buckhannon-Upshur (0-3)

The Bucs have played the No. 12 team in Class AAAA, the No. 1 team in Class AAA and the No. 6 team in Class AA. This week, they get Elkins, No. 11 in Class AAA. There is no rest for the weary for Sloan Baisden and his Bucs. I think this is the week some good things happen to the Bucs as I predict an upset over Elkins and win number one for his Bucs.

Duane: Buckhannon-Upshur: Brian: Buckhannon-Upshur; Katie: Buckhannon-Upshur; Monica: Elkins

Fairmont Senior (3-0) at North Marion (3-0)

A rematch of the Class AA championship from last year. I am not sure North is quite as strong as they were last year. I have a feeling it is going to be Bridgeport and Fairmont Senior in the Class AAA title game this year.

Duane: Fairmont Senior; Brian: Fairmont Senior; Katie: North Marion; Monica: Fairmont Senior

Kansas (1-2) at West Virginia (1-2)

Two of the most disappointing teams in the Big XII this week. Whoever loses this game truly will have the most miserable fan base in America for the week. Something tells me WVU wins this game at home.

Duane: West Virginia; Brian: West Virginia; Katie: Kansas; Monica: Kansas

The Final Four:

Wheeling Park (2-1) at University (1-1)

Duane: Wheeling Park; Brian: Wheeling Park; Katie: Wheeling Park; Monica: University

Preston (0-3) at Robert C. Byrd (2-1)

Duane: Robert C. Byrd; Brian: Robert C. Bryd; Katie: Preston; Monica: Robert C. Byrd

West Virginia Wesleyan (0-2) at Duquesne (1-2)

Duane: Duquesne; Brian: Duquesne; Katie: Duquesne; Monica: Duquesne

Marshall (1-1) at Ohio State (2-0)

Duane: Ohio State; Brian: Ohio State; Katie: Marshall; Monica: Marshall
