B-UHS Fine Arts Students of the Week: Loreli Wolfe and Dani Hovis

Each week Buckhannon-Upshur High School features two Fine Arts Students of the Week to highlight the work students are doing in the art world. This week’s students are Loreli Wolfe and Dani Hovis.

Visual Arts Student of the Week: Loreli Wolfe

Grade: 12

Student Organizations/Ensembles/Clubs/Arts Activities (in-school): National Art Honor Society, Orchestra

Student Extracurriculars Arts (Community): Has participated in many county-level art shows. Helped organize a student craft show and card-making for local nursing home residents.

Student Accolades (Academic & Fine Arts): Received an Upshur Star award for artwork that was on display at the Up. County Board office. Recognized as B-UHS student of the month for October 2023.

Favorite Roles/Pieces/Shows Performed/Etc: Plaster hand sculptures, digital art pieces of the character Hamlet, paintings of sunflowers

Why are the arts important to you? They allow for the expression of myself in ways other activities don’t. With art I always know how to proceed and feel confident.

Future Plans: Illustrate and publish my own graphic novel.

Additional Info You Would Like to Add: As a special project for National Art Honor Society, I helped organize and create cards for the local nursing home.

Arts Teacher(s) Name (in school and out): Ms. Heidi Thompson, Ms. Laura Meese

Performing Arts Student of the Week: Dani Hovis

Grade: Senior

Student Organizations/Ensembles/Clubs/Arts Activities (in-school): Symphonic Band, Concert Band, Marching Band, National Art Honor Society

Student Extracurriculars Arts (Community): Painting the West Virginia Strawberry Festival street mural, craft shows

Student Accolades (Academic & Fine Arts): Student Band Council President, National Honor Society

Favorite Roles/Pieces/Shows Performed/Etc: Witch and the Saint, Showstoppers Field Show

Why are the arts important to you? Band allows me to create intricate pieces of music along with my friends, and music is something everyone can enjoy. Additionally, when there is nothing else, music is always there you just have to listen. Other arts like sculpting and painting allow creative expression to brighten the everyday gloomy community.

Future Plans: Attend WVU for Forensic Chemistry and maybe further study bassoon after freshman year.

Additional Info You Would Like to Add: I play both Bassoon and Clarinet.

Arts Teacher(s) Name (in school and out): Tyler Perske, Heidi Thompson
