Soccer ‘Cats blank winless Wheeling, 5-0

WHEELING — Wesleyan striker Max Evans took a Sinasi Emre Deniz cross and buried it in Wheeling University’s net to score the Bobcats’ first goal en route to what became a 5-0 rout of the Cardinals Wednesday in Wheeling.

The Cardinals controlled much of the first 30 minutes until Evans found himself level with Wheeling’s back line. Deniz quickly delivered the ball and Evans took just a couple of touches before belting it past Wheeling keeper Austin Aaron.

Evans, a freshman from Edinburgh, Scotland added an additional point to his 34th minute score, with an assist to Dillon Rajkovic who claimed the match’s second goal 10 minutes into the second half.

Aggressive but patient Bobcat ball movement frustrated the Cardinals for the final 30 minutes and this led to two consecutive fouls inside the 18-yard box. Sam Newell blasted home the first penalty kick in the 61st minute and Casey Bunker sent Aaron in the wrong direction for the second PK in the 88th minute.

Adam Gribben topped the match off with a score in the final seconds, assisted by Rajkovic.

Wesleyan begins a two-game home stand when it hosts Concord University, a team the Bobcats drew 0-0 early in the season, on Sunday, Oct. 15 at Culpepper Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
