TENNERTON – The Buckhannon-Upshur football program held a two-day camp for local youngsters Thursday and Friday at Freal “Red” Crites Memorial Stadium.

It was the first summer camp under third-year head coach Zach Davis.

The camp attracted 55 on Thursday and 62 youngsters on Friday.

The camp brought together the coaching staffs from all levels in Upshur County.

The camp was under the direction of Davis and his staff along with several current football players, first year Buckhannon-Upshur Middle School head coach Sloan Baisden (Thursday only) and his staff as well as several Buckhannon youth football coaches.

“The main purpose of the camp was to simply get everyone on the same page,” noted Davis. “The camp allowed everyone to get to know one another from all levels. For both the kids and the coaches and to build some trust and communication. I was told that communication was lacking from the youth leagues to the high school program, and this allows us to bring everyone together. We get to rub elbows with the other coaches in the county and that is a good thing. I think a lot of people are thrilled to see Buckhannon football at all levels all together and doing something for the kids.”

Davis said the two-day camp went well for everyone involved.

“I think the kids got a lot out of it and I think the coaches got a lot out it,” stated Davis. “We had a good, positive energy here for the two days.”

The campers were taught the basics of the game on both offense and defense and each day concluded with a game.

“Again, this was just a great way to see people from all levels of football here in the county to interact,” concluded Davis. “That is what good programs do.”
