Charleston Wins 2017-18 MEC Commissioner’s Cup

The University of Charleston has won the 2017-18 Mountain East Conference Commissioner’s Cup recognizing overall athletic excellence among its membership on an annual basis.

The standings are compiled utilizing an “all-sports rating.” This rating is determined by a formula that awards points to a school for its regular season finish equal to the number of teams per sport sponsored by the MEC, and then divided by the number of sports offered by the institution. The final rating is a percentage of points acquired against the number of points available (average percentile finish in the standings of each sport sponsored by an institution).

Charleston took the 2017-18 Commissioner’s Cup with an All-Sports rating of 0.7259. It was the third Commissioner’s Cup for the Golden Eagles in five years. UC won league championships in men’s soccer, men’s golf, baseball and men’s track.

Led by a conference title in football, Shepherd finished second in the Commissioner’s Cup standings. West Virginia Wesleyan, last year’s winner, was third after capturing league titles in women’s cross country, women’s soccer, softball, men’s tennis and men’s swimming. The Bobcats also won a tournament title in men’s soccer.

Wheeling Jesuit was fourth, Fairmont State was fifth and UVa-Wise was sixth.

Eleven of the 12 schools in the league won a regular season or tournament championship in 2017-18.
