Wesleyan softball shuts out Wheeling twice in doubleheader sweep

WHEELING, W.Va. – The West Virginia Wesleyan softball team shutout the Wheeling Cardinals Saturday afternoon on the road, taking the first game 5-0 and winning 8-0 in five innings in the second game. The Lady Bobcats totaled 15 hits while only allowing five hits between the two games.

Game 1
Morgan Norris and Andie Dizon put together two out offense in the top of the first with back-to-back singles, eventually being stranded from a strikeout. The Cardinals had their only hit of the game in their first at-bat in the bottom of the first Alyssa Souders opened the top of the second with a single and Kiley Turner ripped a double to left to score Souders, plating the first run of the game.

Both squads were quiet until the top of the fifth when Norris gave the Lady Bobcats a 4-0 lead on a big 3-run home run. Hannah Hudson continued her dominance in the bottom of the fifth, striking out two batters. After Maya Reyes walked with two outs, Kiley Turner picked up her second RBI of the day with a double to right, extending the lead to 5-0.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Cardinals were sat down 1-2-3 to end the game.

Maddie Munoz had the lone hit for the Cardinals. Maria Clark went five innings, picking up the loss after giving up four runs (all earned) on seven hits and striking out two.

Norris tallied two hits, including her three-run home run. Turner also picked up two hits and finished with two runs knocked in. Hudson was dominate en route to her 12th win of the season, going seven innings with only one hit and one walk while striking out seven.

Game 2
The second inning saw the Lady Bobcats put up three runs. With Dizon, Alli Robinson and Souders all getting on to load the bases, Turner stayed hot with a two-run single to left field. Alyssa Rohr then picked up a two out single that plated Kaitlyn Rizor to make it 3-0.

In the top of the third, Norris singled in the infield and Dizon picked up two of her four runs-batted-in on a homer to left, extending the Lady Bobcat lead to 5-0. Jenna Christopher scored on a wild pitch early in the top of the fourth and Dizon got her other two runs-batted-in with a two-run double to right. With the Lady Bobcats up 8-0, Kendall Stoffel finished out strong to secure the 8-0 win in five innings.

Four different Cardinals made up the four hits on the day. Randi Holder was the losing pitcher after just two innings, allowing five runs (all earned) on six hits. The bullpen pitched three innings and gave up three runs (two earned) on just one hit.

Dizon was 3-3 with four RBIs to lead the Lady Bobcats with Rohr and Turner adding two RBIs apiece as well. Stoffel grabbed her 16th win of the season after pitching five innings and surrendering four hits while striking out six.
