Lady ‘Cats fall in lacrosse opener to Ashland, 21-6

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. – The West Virginia Wesleyan lacrosse team fell to Ashland 21-6 in the 2023 season opener at Cebe Ross Field. The Eagles were able to get off 40 shots compared to Wesleyan’s nine in the win.

Ashland scored in the first 32 seconds of the game off of a Cassady Becker goal. They struck five more times before Emma Adcock put the Lady Bobcats on the board with 5:21 left in the opening quarter to make it 6-1. AU scored a pair of consecutive goals until Kaitlynn Canby answered with a goal of her own. Ashland struck again in the closing minutes to take a 9-2 lead into the second quarter.

The Eagles outscored the Lady Bobcats 7-0 in the second quarter and only allowed Wesleyan to get one shot off, controlling the tempo heading into halftime. AU led 16-2 at the break.

Adcock scored back-to-back goals for the Lady Bobcats to open the second half, trimming the deficit to 16-4. Ashland answered, scoring two more goals before the quarter ended to lead by 14 going into the closing quarter.

The fourth quarter saw Adcock score two more goals. The Eagles were also able to score three times, closing the game out at 21-6.

Ten different Eagles scored a goal, led by Cassady Becker’s four goals. Rachel Crumbacher had three of the team’s six assists.

Wesleyan was led by Adcock’s five goals on five shots. Kaitlynn Canby had one goal on the day. Gabriella Gomez had 11 saves today.

The Lady Bobcats will be back home next Saturday to take on Mount Union at 3 p.m.
