Raising the Jolly Roger With… Nathan Cornett

Nathan Cornett

TENNERTON — In continuing to bring you the best sports coverage in Upshur County, the My Buckhannon sports department is pleased to present another edition of our exclusive — Raising the Jolly Roger With…

In ‘Raising the Jolly Roger With…’ the My Buckhannon sports department will interview a senior student-athlete from Buckhannon-Upshur to get to know them better and what makes them tick both on and off the field. Don’t settle for cheap knockoffs!

Our student-athlete this week is Nathan Cornett — enjoy!

1. Please list all the sports you have played at B-U and what year you played them? I have only participated in wrestling. I started wrestling in seventh grade and have done it every year since.

2. What has been your favorite athletic moment at Buckhannon-Upshur that you participated in? My favorite athletic moment was when I finally placed at the state tournament. It was something I worked really hard for and was very rewarding to achieve that goal.

3. Describe your toughest practice at Buckhannon-Upshur. What sport and who was the coach? The hardest practice in which I’ve experienced was a wrestling practice known as a Flag Day. I’m not sure of the specific time/date of this practice but it is just a two-hour practice of constant movement with the intent of fatiguing you and pushing yourself to the limits. These practices were coached by Jacob Orr, Levi Bender, and Craig Wallace.

4. Do you have a favorite saying from one of your head coaches? “Embrace the suck”

5. What was or is your favorite class you have taken at Buckhannon-Upshur and who taught it? Why was it your favorite? My favorite class I have taken at B-U would probably be Math III Stem taught by Mrs. Reger. I really enjoy math as a subject and the way Mrs. Reger taught was perfect for my understanding of the topics we discussed. She was a fantastic teacher and I learned important math for my future.

6. What is your favorite thing about being a Buccaneer? My favorite thing about being a Buccaneer, at least in wrestling, is the family aspect that I experience daily. My entire team and I act like one big family which creates a fun environment when practicing and competing.

7. If you were asked to play another sport, what would it be and why? I would probably have to say cross country. I respect the athletes who compete in cross country, and I somewhat enjoy running.

8. Who is your hero and why? My hero is my father, Peter Cornett. He has been there for me my whole life and he has taught me what it means to be a good person. Without him I would, in no way, be the person I am today. I’m very thankful for him.

9. What do you want to be when you grow up? I want to be an architect.

10. What are your initial plans after graduation this spring? Get a summer job to raise money for college. After summer I plan to attend college but am unsure which college as of now.

11. What question do you hate to answer? I don’t think there is a question that I hate to answer. I haven’t been asked enough interview questions to have a answer.

12. Who is the best athlete in your family? The best athlete in my family would probably be my father. He used to play soccer and baseball and even played collegiate soccer at Northland College on a scholarship.

13. Do you have a favorite vacation spot? If so, where? I wouldn’t say I have a favorite vacation spot. I rarely go back to the same spot every vacation trip; I enjoy going to different places.

14. What is your favorite food and one thing you won’t eat? My dad’s homemade spaghetti is my favorite food to eat. I will under no circumstances eat yogurt.

15. What advice would you give to a young athlete ready to start his/her time as a Buccaneer? Fully buy into whatever sport you chose to compete in. Commit everything you have to it and work hard, but don’t forget to have fun. You should always enjoy it.
