BUCKHANNON – One person was transported to St. Joseph’s Hospital after a vehicle hit several objects before damaging a residence’s porch on College Avenue Monday afternoon.

According to the wreck report filed by Lt. Doug Loudin with the Buckhannon Police Department, the wreck occurred on Monday, Jan. 10, 2023, at 12:29 p.m., at the intersection of South Florida Street and College Avenue.

According to the report, Allen Evix, 63, of Buckhannon was driving a blue 2008 Toyota Corolla north on South Florida Street, approaching the intersection with College Avenue. At the same time, Taylor Weese, 19, of Buckhannon, was driving a blue 2009 Volkswagen Jetta east on College Avenue, heading towards West Virginia Wesleyan College.

Evix told officers he started coughing and blacked out. He struck a fire hydrant, then hit Weese’s vehicle before traveling across College Avenue, where he hit the guidewire to a telephone pole, breaking the pole, according to the wreck report. Evix continued to travel northwest into the yard of a residence located on the corner of South Florida Street and College Avenue, causing damage to the porch, the report notes.

“I blacked out and don’t remember anything until the car was sitting still,” Evix said. The report notes that Evix called his wife to tell her he was in an accident, but could not tell her where he was at.

Evix was cited for failure to maintain control of the vehicle and unsafe or prohibited lane change. Drug and alcohol use were not suspected, the report notes.

He was medically transported by Upshur County EMS to St. Joseph’s Hospital.
