Basketball Lady ‘Cats drop to 0-2 after losing at home to Fairmont State, 87-68

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. – The West Virginia Wesleyan (0-2, 0-2) women’s basketball team dropped a home game to Fairmont State (4-0, 2-0) on Tuesday (Nov. 22) night inside Rockefeller Center.

WVWC Leaders
Emma Witt had a team-leading 16 points. Akalah Jackson added 14 points, Electra Allembert posted 13 points and Daveona Hatchell had 11 points. Hatchell and Allembert each brought down eight rebounds. Courtney Wilfong and Hatchell led the Lady Bobcats with three assists a piece.

Inside the First Half
The Falcons jumped out to an early 12-4 lead to begin the game. Cierra Tolbert, Akalah Jackson, and M`laya Ainsworth grabbed a bucket for the Lady Bobcats and WVWC trailed 14-10 with 2:31 left in the first period. Fairmont state ended the first quarter on an 8-5 run and led 22-15.

Fairmont State scored the first five points of the second period before a driving layup from Witt and the Falcons led 27-17. FSU went on a 13-5 scoring run and led 40-21 with 4:31 left to play in the first half. After a layup from Hatchell, Akalah Jackson scored the next seven points for the Lady Bobcats trailed 44-30.

Inside the Second Half
At the 6:29 minute mark in the third quarter, Electra Allembert made a layup and WVWC trailed 53-40. After going point for point the next six possessions, Fairmont State led 59-46. Following a layup from Katy Darnell, Akalah Jackson drilled a shot from beyond the arc on a great find from Courtney Wilfong and WVWC trailed 61-49. Hatchell nailed a jumper as time expired and the Lady Bobcats trailed 69-56.

Jalen Gibbs scored the first points of the fourth quarter for the Falcons and FSU led 71-56. Emma Witt connected on a free throw and sank a jumper and WVWC trailed 71-59. Fairmont State went on a 7-2 scoring run and the Falcons led 78-61 before eventually winning 87-68.

Up Next
The Lady Bobcats will travel to West Liberty, W.Va. on Wednesday (Nov. 30) to take on West Liberty in a MEC conference game. The game is slated to begin at 5:30 p.m.
