In ‘Raising the Jolly Roger With…’ the My Buckhannon sports department will interview a senior student-athlete from Buckhannon-Upshur to get to know them better and what makes them tick both on and off the field. Don’t settle for cheap knockoffs!
Our student-athlete this week is Cameron Tenney — enjoy!
1. Please list all the sports you have played at B-U and what year you played them? I have played baseball for B-U in 2019, 2021 and 2022. B-U baseball was canceled in 2020 due to COVID-19.
2. What has been your favorite athletic moment at Buckhannon-Upshur that you participated in? My favorite athletic moment at B-U was probably my junior year when we played Lewis County. The game was intense the whole way through and one play could make or break the game. In the end, we ended up coming out with the win.
3. Describe your toughest practice at Buckhannon-Upshur. What sport and who was the coach? My toughest practice at B-U was my freshman year of tryouts with coaches Squires, Gitzen and Lane. We had a lot of running throughout the halls of the school and also lots of pressure as a freshman trying out for a sport. I knew that hard work would pay off in the end, so everyday I would push myself to do the best I possibly could.
4. Do you have a favorite saying from one of your head coaches? Coach Squires always is giving us positive sayings and thoughts to go throughout the game to keep our confidence up. Coach Lane always jokes and says, “I don’t care if it’s a tomato, hit it square.”
5. What was or is your favorite class you have taken at Buckhannon-Upshur and who taught it? Why was it your favorite? My favorite class I have taken at B-U would be Business Computer Applications with Mr. Nichols. It is my favorite class because I learned valuable skills needed in my future.
6. What is your favorite thing about being a Buccaneer? My favorite thing about being a Buccaneer is the hometown pride that the community shows toward the athletes.
7. If you were asked to play another sport, what would it be and why? I would choose to play golf because I feel like it is a more relaxed sport but also resembles baseball in a way.
8. Who is your hero and why? I really do not have a hero, but I have a lot of people that have influenced my life and I appreciate them.
9. What do you want to be when you grow up? When I grow up, I want to pursue my dream of becoming a pilot.
10. What are your initial plans after graduation this spring? After graduation, I plan on joining the Air Force and starting Flight School at Marshall University after Basic Training and Tech School.
11. What question do you hate to answer? I hate answering when my parents always ask where I have been and what I have been doing.
12. Who is the best athlete in your family? I have no siblings, so I would be the best athlete in the family.
13. Do you have a favorite vacation spot? If so, where? My family and I take a trip every other summer to Gatlinburg, Tennessee. I enjoy the views of the mountains and the many activities to explore.
14. What is your favorite food and one thing you won’t eat. My favorite food is crab legs and I will not eat soup.
15. What advice would you give to a young athlete ready to start his/her time as a Buccaneer? Play for the love of the game, give everything you have got, and never give up.
