Tired of your old tires? Upshur County Tire Amnesty Day is set for this Saturday, March 5

BUCKHANNON – The City of Buckhannon, along with the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection’s Rehabilitation Environmental Action Plan is sponsoring the Upshur County Tire Amnesty Day 2022 which will be held on Saturday, March 5, 2022.

The event will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 395 Mud Lick Road at the City of Buckhannon Street Department, which is located across from the waste transfer station.

City of Buckhannon Public Works Director Jerry Arnold said the city provides the space and an employee, while the DEP provides the funding and trucks for the event.

“The DEP tries to do these tire amnesty days at least once a year in every county; however, this is the first one in Upshur County for a few years due to the COVID pandemic,” Arnold said. “Events like this help the city and the county. In years past, people who did not want to pay $2 each to dispose of their used tires would dump them in illegal sites.”

Arnold said the amnesty tire events help prevent tires from being improperly disposed of, adding he feels this is a valuable program.

“We are happy to be helping with this event. The DEP already has two trucks ready to begin collecting the tires,” Arnold said. “This is a win-win for the city, the county, the state and for residents.”

Only tires belonging to West Virginia state residents will be accepted and those turning in tires will need to have their driver’s license available as they sign in. There is a limit of 10 tires per resident and the tires must be off their rims. Only tires from passenger cars and light trucks are eligible.

Officials have asked those attending the Upshur County Tire Amnesty Day 2022 to not arrive before 8:45 a.m.
