Davis Medical Center welcomes Jennifer Abel, PMHNP

Elkins, W.Va. –Jennifer Abel, Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP-BC), has joined the team at Laurel Place Inpatient Behavioral Health Unit, with a wealth of experience in the field of mental health.

Abel received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Mountain State University (Beckley, WV); her Master of Science in Nursing, Family Nurse Practitioner from Wheeling Jesuit University (Wheeling, WVV) and a Post-Masters Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Certification from Wilmington University (New Castle, DE).

She has over seven years of experience as a nurse practitioner with inpatient and outpatient care, and eighteen years of experience in the nursing field.

“Jennifer’s specialized experience in psychiatric mental health brings great value to the care we give to patients in Laurel Place,” said DMC Chief Nursing Officer Kathy Sturm, RN.

“Our short-term behavioral health unit treats persons who suffer from depression, anxiety, social withdrawal and a range of other conditions.  Jennifer will provide thorough psychiatric evaluations to assess and diagnose the patient’s condition, and then determine appropriate treatment interventions.”

“I like the challenge of making a positive difference in someone’s life,” said Abel.  “With appropriate treatment and medicine we see patients get back to being themselves.  Patient successes inspire me to do what I do.”

Abel has worked in various WV care settings including the William R. Sharpe Jr. Hospital, St. Joseph’s Hospital, United Hospital Center, and the Myers Clinic.  In addition, she holds various certifications in advanced practice registered nursing, medication assistance therapy, basic life support, and DEA certification.

“Addressing a mental health stigma is deeply personal so it’s important that patients know they can trust me, and they can feel safe in their care.  Success may not come overnight, but I’m here for them throughout their recovery journey,” Abel added.
