Wesleyan struggles offensively in 61-39 road loss to Shepherd

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. — The West Virginia Wesleyan (1-5) men’s basketball team lost a non-conference clash by a 61-39 score on the road to Shepherd (4-1) on Sunday inside the Butcher Center.

Leaders for WVWC
Jayden Hibbitt led Wesleyan in scoring for the fifth time this season with 16 points. In his second start of the season, Braeden McGrew scored eight points, hauled in six rebounds and dished out three assists.

Leaders for Shepherd
Kyle Daggett recorded a double-double of 11 points and 11 rebounds. Dan McClain-Corley scored 16 points with seven boards.

Team Stats
Shepherd shot 24-for-53 from the field (45.3 percent). West Virginia Wesleyan did not visit the charity stripe.

Inside the First Half
Joseph Keenan drained a 3-pointer from the corner as WVWC trailed 8-5 with 16:37 to play early in the first half. Seven minutes into the first half, Wesleyan fell behind 15-7 before a quick 6-0 spurt capped off by a Hibbitt transition layup pulled the visitors within two.

Tyler Slone connected on a triple with 11:10 remaining in the first half to cut the Rams lead to one point (17-16). That margin only increased for the rest of the game with Shepherd outscoring the Bobcats 16-4 to close out the first half.

Inside the Second Half
McGrew drilled his second trey of the game with 13:01 left in regulation with his team trailing 45-32. The Rams worked the ball inside to increase their advantage throughout the second half.

Kabe Ellis played a career-high 16 minutes and sank a jumper at the 3:08 mark.
