Volleyball Lady ‘Cats take first set but tumble to Seton Hill

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. — The West Virginia Wesleyan volleyball team (1-10, 1-1 Mountain East Conference) fell in a non-conference match versus Seton Hill (8-6, 3-2 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference) 3-1 on Saturday (Oct. 2) afternoon at Rockefeller Center.
 
WVWC Leaders
Hope Arce-Reed led the charge with eight kills. Anaya HymanJenny Lundy and Lexis Tatum all accumulated seven kills. Payton Hefner had 20 assists, while Maddi Carpenter totaled 17 assists. Hefner smashed three service aces, and Hyman had one service ace.
 
Autumn Molenhouse finished with eight digs. Tatum and Makenzie Yates totaled seven digs each. The Lady Bobcats ended the match with four block solos. Milan Reynolds led with two block solos, while Arce-Reed and Joelle Lalla each had one solo block.
 
Seton Hill Leaders
Paige Cole (17) and Mara Yahner (11) both eclipsed the double-digit kill mark. Rock Riley passed 24 assists. Two Griffins had double-digit assist totals: Carrie Leazer (3) and Mariela Alvarado (2).
 
Leazer, the SHU libero, had a match-high 18 digs. Cole totaled five block assists. Elizabeth Ward, Bobbi Rempe and Katie Koziarz each ended with three block assists.
 
Inside Set One
Seton Hill won six out of the first seven decisions of the match. The Bobcats responded with a service ace from Hyman to cut the SHU lead to 6-4. After a kill from Rempe, Lalla and Tatum responded with kills to put Wesleyan within one point of the Griffins. WVWC tied the set at nine after a SHU attack error.
 
Seton Hill won the next four points to take a 13-9 lead. Yates smoked her second kill of the set to make the score 13-10 SHU. Rock connected on a pass from Leazer to put SHU ahead 14-10. Wesleyan clawed back and won the next four points to tie the set at 14. The two squads traded the next six decisions to put the tally at 17-17. A Griffin attack error gave Wesleyan their first lead of the set. Seton Hill tied the score at 19. 
 
Michela Ayers delivered her first kill of the afternoon to put the ‘Cats back in the lead. Another Rempe kill turned the lead back over to SHU, 21-20. A service error from SHU knotted the score at 21. Hefner stepped up to the service line and executed two consecutive service aces and gave Wesleyan a two-point advantage late in the set. Hyman’s second kill of the set gave set point to WVWC. Ayers put a ball down to give the ‘Cats set one, 25-23.
 
Inside Set Two
The Griffins opened set two with a 7-1 run. WVWC cut the deficit to three points after an attack error from SHU. Seton Hill increased their lead to eight and made the score 18-10. Wesleyan responded and won the next three points to cut the deficit to five points. The Bobcats trailed 20-16 after an attack error from SHU. A kill from Arce-Reed forced a timeout from Seton Hill with the score at 21-19. Reynolds put Wesleyan within one point after the SHU timeout. 
 
The Griffins won the next two points to lead 23-20. Arce-Reed responded with a kill and put WVWC within two points. Cole finished a kill with an assist from Rock and forced set point for SHU. A Hyman kill and a Hefner ace put Wesleyan within one point. Yahner hit her third kill of the set and gave the Griffins a 25-23 set two victory.
 
Inside Set Three
Lundy slammed her second kill of the afternoon to give Wesleyan an early 1-0 lead. SHU won the next three points. Yates put Wesleyan within one with a kill assisted by Hefner. SHU extended their lead to 11-5 after a kill by Cole. Lundy’s fifth kill of the afternoon cut the deficit to five. The Griffins went on a 7-0 run and took a 22-10 lead. Yahner once again ended the set with a kill and gave Seton Hill a 25-12 set three win.
 
Inside Set Four
Seton Hill won five of the first seven points. Tatum put Wesleyan within one point following her sixth kill of the match. The two teams traded the next two points to put the score at 7-6 in favor of SHU. The Griffins won the next three points and held a 10-6 advantage. Hyman struck her sixth kill of the match on the next point. A SHU attack error decreased their lead to two points.
 
The Griffins claimed the next eight points and jumped to an 18-8 lead. The Bobcats closed the gap to a five-point margin after a kill by Arce-Reed. The Griffins won the final set by eight points, 25-17.
 
Up Next
The Lady Bobcats will resume MEC play on Tuesday (Oct. 5) at home versus Glenville State. The match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
