WVU students named Gilman Scholars

Six West Virginia University students will study or intern abroad this summer as Gilman Scholars.

The U.S. Department of State’s Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarship enables them to gain skills that are critical to the country’s national security and economic prosperity while gaining an enriching cultural and career-building experience.

WVU’s Gilman Scholars will travel to three continents this summer.

Wrenna Dorrer of Gerrardstown will intern with the U.S. State Department in Singapore. She is a senior majoring in international studies and interdisciplinary studies.

Myya Helm of West Union will study at the Qasid Arabic Institute in Jordan. She is a junior Honors College student majoring in political science and international studies.

Iain MacKay of Bend, Oregon will study at San Gemini Preservation Studies International Institute in Italy. He is a senior Honors College student majoring in art history and philosophy.

Morgan McCardell of Martinsburg will study disability and Japanese society at Waseda University in Japan. She is a senior enrolled in the Regents Bachelor of Arts program.

Veronica Nicole of Jane Lew will intern at Psylo Fashion in the United Kingdom. She is a senior majoring in fashion, dress and merchandising.

Juliana O’Reilly of Martinsburg will travel to Vietnam and Cambodia with a WVU faculty-led program to study social issues of public health with Neal Newfield. She is a senior exercise physiology major and Honors College student.

“These six students will gain important international experience as they intern and study abroad this summer,” said Amy Cyphert, director of the ASPIRE Office. “The Gilman Scholarship provides amazing opportunities for students who otherwise might not have the resources to go abroad, and we know these scholars will make the most of their experiences.”

Applicants for the Gilman Scholarship are certified by the Office of Global Affairs and Financial Aid. Students who are interested applying for this or other nationally competitive scholarships can email aspire@mail.wvu.edu for an appointment.
