Wesleyan lacrosse falls in opener to Lake Erie, 14-8

BUCKHANNON — Lake Eerie College traveled to snowy Cebe Ross Field for West Virginia Wesleyan’s home opener Sunday and defeated the Lady Bobcats 14-8.

Lake Eerie got in the first goal on a free position shot by Madelyn Goodrich at 12:21 in the first quarter and she added a second goal on a second free position shot less than 30 seconds later to put the Storm up 2-0. But Wesleyan’s Talia Berardo got the Lady Bobcats on the board with her first goal of the season at 10:31. Lake Eerie added two more goals before the end of the first on scores by Shannon Smith with 7:17 remaining and Brooke McNeal with a minute left in the quarter, both free position shots.

The Lady Bobcats quickly got a point closer in the second quarter on a free position shot by Kaitlyn Canby just 34 seconds in, but Lake Erie’s McNeal erased it with a goal at 11:40. McNeal added her third goal of the game at 8:42 to put the Storm up 6-2.

Wesleyan turned on the jets to notch two quick goals by Erin Mobley (6:31) and Canby (4:18) and the momentum changed for a short time until the Storm’s Cynthia Saxby snapped a shot passed Bobcat keeper Gabriella Gomez to put her team up 7-4 with 44 seconds before the half.

Wesleyan fell far behind in the third quarter as Lake Eerie scored six goals to Wesleyan’ lone point (Canby at 3:00) but the Lady Bobcats scratched out a three-goals-to-one advantage in the final 15 minutes on scores by Berardo (13:29 and 6:04) and Canby (8:22).

Wesleyan next hosts Malone University Saturday, Feb. 24. The game begins at 1 p.m.
