Upshur County receive Schools Safety Grant

BUCKHANNON — Upshur County Schools is proud to announce a grant award in the amount $146,230 to increase safety measures in our schools.

In preparing this grant application, Mrs. Jodie Akers and Dr. Jeffery Harvey worked collaboratively with the Upshur County Commission and Upshur County Sheriff’s office, seeking to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of communication speed with first responders.

Dr. Sara Lewis-Stankus noted, “In times such as these, we must continue to seek opportunities to keep our families informed, extend safety measures and increase efficiencies to ensure the best for our students and personnel.”

The grant was issued from the United States Department of Justice for Upshur County through the Office of Community Oriented Policing Services’ School Violence Prevention Program (SVPP).

This grant will allow the Upshur County Schools to install an early warning capability phone system which will increase safety factors for staff and students.

Dr. Tammy Samples, President of the Upshur County School Board, would like to thank Congressman Alex X. Mooney for his continued support and assistance in securing this school safety grant.
