BUCKHANNON, W.Va. – St. Joseph’s Hospital is recognizing Malnutrition Awareness Week October 4 to 9. Sponsored by the American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (ASPEN), the week is designed to help bring awareness to medical personnel and patients about the consequences of malnutrition. Malnutrition has a negative impact on patient outcome resulting in longer hospital stays, higher medical costs and increased mortality.
Malnutrition is highest in the older population over the age of 65. Signs of malnutrition in adults include unplanned weight loss, loss of appetite, inability to eat or eating only small amounts, feeling weak or tired and swelling or fluid accumulation. Signs in children include being under or overweight, not growing longer or taller, eating less than usual, not eating well due to stomach problems or being less playful and sleeping more than usual. If you notice any of these symptoms, talk to your healthcare provider.
St. Joseph’s Hospital has a Registered Dietitian who can assist patients with managing chronic diseases, help with a weight loss program and assist those with food allergies and sensitivities.
