Literacy Volunteers of Upshur County has welcomed a familiar face into a new role.
Rachel Strawder has officially stepped into the position of director, as Jennifer Higham steps back from the role she has held with dedication for several years.
Strawder, who has worked with the organization since 2017 and served as an AmeriCorps VISTA member for three years, brings deep personal and professional experience to the position.
“I’ve seen a lot of directors come and go over the years, and I’ve always loved what Literacy Volunteers provides to the community,” Strawder said. “When Jennifer told me she was stepping back, I thought, ‘Let’s give it a shot.’ I just know there’s such a need here in Upshur County.”
Strawder said her personal journey with education fuels her passion for the work.
“When I graduated, I was probably on about a fourth-grade reading level,” she recalled. “I remember my teachers saying, ‘She can’t learn, she’s stupid.’ But everyone can learn — it just needs to be taught a different way.”
Looking ahead, Strawder plans to maintain the organization’s presence at community events, including Festival Fridays and free book giveaways.
“Our summer hours are Monday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and Fridays are dedicated to Festival Friday events,” she said. “We’re always accepting book donations, and we’re here if anyone is interested in becoming a student or just wants to stop in and check us out.”
As Strawder begins her new chapter, Higham expressed gratitude and optimism.
“I’m so thrilled Rachel is taking over,” Higham said. “She’s been involved with Literacy Volunteers for years and really understands what we’re about. It’s been an honor to serve this community, and I’m confident the organization is in great hands moving forward.”
