A new program at Pretty Peonies Parlor in downtown Buckhannon is inviting community members to pick up a brush, pencil, or any medium they choose and explore the healing power of art.
“Art Through Emotion” is the vision of organizer Nick Folmsbee, a certified recovery and life coach, who says the sessions are designed to help people process emotions, reduce stress, and connect more deeply with themselves.
“‘Art Through Emotion’ was born from the belief that creativity can be one of the most powerful ways to process and release what’s inside us,” Folmsbee said. “I’ve seen how art can help people work through pain, find clarity, and even rediscover joy. But this isn’t only for those seeking to work through something. My door is open to anyone who simply wants to create in a welcoming, judgment-free space.”
The sessions, which cost $30 per person, will offer a variety of mixed-media options, from painting and drawing to collage and sculpture. For those who cannot afford the full cost, Folmsbee encourages participants to pay what they can.
“Each session is a chance to explore, express and connect, whether you are painting your feelings or just enjoying the act of making something beautiful,” he said.
In preparation for the program, Folmsbee is seeking donations from local artists to help make the space warm, inspiring and full of heart. Community members can contribute original works of art, including paintings, drawings, sculptures or mixed media, as well as art supplies such as canvases, paints, brushes, magazines, pencils and paper. Artists are encouraged to include their name and social media information so they can be credited and celebrated for their contributions.
“Your work could make a powerful impact on someone’s healing journey,” Folmsbee said.
Donations can be arranged through Folmsbee or Pretty Peonies Parlor. While visiting the studio, Folmsbee also encourages patrons to view the permanent artwork of Pretty Peonies owner Kaitlyn Walker and take in the atmosphere of her vibrant downtown space.
