New $35 million charcoal manufacturing facility coming to Buckhannon

Prime 6, a wood products company that makes a sustainable charcoal alternative, will soon open a manufacturing facility in Buckhannon, according to Governor Jim Justice. The $35 million investment is anticipated to create 75 jobs in the area.

“I am extremely proud to welcome Prime 6 to Upshur County and West Virginia,” Justice said. He emphasized the historical significance of wood in the state, noting its role in the economy and way of life for generations.

“Prime 6’s decision to put down roots with their new facility not only carries on that rich tradition but proves we are the best place to be for growing forward-thinking, sustainable businesses,” Justice said. “This facility will bring incredible good-paying jobs to the hardest working group of people Prime 6 could invest in. I thank them for believing in West Virginia as much as I do.”

Prime 6 will be located in the former Novelis plant, which closed in June.

Operations at the new Prime 6 facility are expected to commence in the coming months, and job openings will be announced soon, according to the governor. The company’s establishment in Buckhannon is projected to create substantial impacts on the local economy, benefiting businesses, suppliers and residents.

Prime 6 is known for its innovative approach to upcycling wood waste, converting it into premium products for the hospitality industry. All of its products are USDA-certified.

“Our products are crafted through the innovative process of upcycling wood waste, effectively cleaning up waste and significantly reducing the need for tree-cutting for the hospitality industry,” the woman-owned business states on its website. “Our proprietary manufacturing methods ensure emissions-free production.”

The business was launched in 2018, and founders Riki and Oron Franco appeared on the TV show Shark Tank in 2020, where they secured a $200,000 investment from Kevin O’Leary in return for a 25% equity stake in the company.

West Virginia Department of Economic Development Secretary Mitch Carmichael expressed support for the new venture.

“We are excited to welcome Prime 6 to West Virginia,” Carmichael said. “Their commitment to sustainability and community aligns perfectly with our state’s values, and we look forward to supporting their continued growth and success in Buckhannon.”
