ATV crash into pond on Sand Run Road claims life of Buckhannon man

A Buckhannon man has died after wrecking his ATV late Saturday night, the Upshur County Sheriff’s Office said in a social media post Sunday.

Joshua Matthew Shrift crashed into a pond on Sand Run Road and died, the sheriff’s office said.

Below is the complete post:

“On Saturday, August 3, 2024, at approximately 11:57 p.m., deputies of the Upshur County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to a single-vehicle motor vehicle crash on Sand Run Road in Upshur County, West Virginia.

“The investigation revealed that the driver was Joshua Matthew Shrift of Buckhannon. Mr. Shrift was operating a 2019 Suzuki LT ATV on Sand Run Road, lost control, ran off the roadway to the right and crashed into a pond. Mr. Shrift was deceased as a result of the crash.

“The West Virginia State Police and Buckhannon Fire Department, Upshur County EMS also responded and assisted during this investigation.

“This investigation is ongoing. Mr. Shrift was taken to the WV State Medical Examiner Office in Charleston, WV.”
