Buckhannon, WV, October 7, 2019 — The NASA West Virginia Space Grant Consortium (WVSGC) awarded NASA Fellowships to 11 West Virginia Wesleyan College’s physics majors. The announcement was made by Dr. Joseph Wiest, professor of physics. “Winners are selected based on their academic record and their commitment to a discipline of interest to NASA,” said Dr. Wiest, who also serves as a member of the NASA Board.

This year’s winners are Cameron Branch, Pittsburgh; Luke Feldhake, Beaver, WV; Carson Fox, Ravenswood, WV; Madisyn Fox, Caldwell, WV; Simon Hepburn, Buckhannon, WV; Evin Hurt, Martinsburg, WV; Jackson Igo, Cross Lanes, WV; Justin Knotts, Morgantown, WV; Anthony Napoleon, Pittsburgh; Baylee Senator, Chapmanville, WV; and Josh Yancosek, Washington, PA.

These one-year Fellowships are awarded to outstanding undergraduate students in fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), who are engaged in a research project during the academic year and/or summer term. A faculty member serves as a mentor and research advisor for the project. The amount of these awards is $1,000 and is paid to the student as a stipend.

Wesleyan is a long-time member of the NASA WVSGC. In addition to awarding fellowships during the academic year and each summer, the consortium provides technical advice to the College’s Space Club in building payloads to be launched from NASA rockets.

Wesleyan, which has over 60 physics majors, offers a bachelor of arts in physics and a bachelor of science in applied physics. The College also has 3-2 engineering agreements with the University of Virginia, Virginia Tech University, Marshall University, and West Virginia University.
