Carpenter Crunch Time Week 6; A quarterback mess at WVU

West Virginia’s quarterback situation is in turmoil as starter Nicco Marchiol heads toward a medical redshirt and transfer after injury, backups have struggled or been injured, and coach Rich Rodriguez faces mounting criticism.

BUCKHANNNON – So it took all of five weeks of Rich Rodriguez to run off starting quarterback Nicco Marchiol at West Virginia.

Marchiol started the first four games of the season but missed last Saturday’s loss to Utah with a foot injury. He is already listed as out for Friday night’s road matchup with No. 23 BYU. Marchiol is expected to pursue a medical redshirt and enter the transfer portal after the season.

Let’s be honest, Marchiol didn’t play that great this year as he simply isn’t a good fit for Rodriguez’s offensive scheme whatever that is. The offensive line also never did Marchiol any favors this year.

Backup Jaylen Henderson, who started against Utah has been ruled out with an injury against BYU, hasn’t provided a spark at that position either completing just seven of his 18 passes for 50 yards.

Scotty Fox Jr. threw two awful interceptions against Pitt, but he shouldn’t have been put in that spot by Rodriguez to begin with.

I guess Khalil Wilkins has provided some hope after leading WVU on two scoring drives against the junior varsity Utah defense last week. Redshirt junior Max Brown is still in the mix to play against BYU I guess…what a mess.

I do have a rhetorical question for all the Fraud fans out there…so for everyone saying we have to give him time to build the program, what exactly are we supposed to do on Saturday’s until then? Keep watching them lose by 40? Someone wake me when the winning begins. I want to be first in line to jump on the bandwagon,

One team that doesn’t have a quarterback issue is Buckhannon-Upshur. It took a while to confirm, but this week B-U head coach Sloan Baisden announced that Dawson Tenney’s 347 passing yards against Elkins two weeks ago was indeed a new school record. So, congrats to Tenney on the new record.

Now onto the important stuff, the My Buckhannon staff contest. The standings look like this.

STANDINGS (WEEK 5)

Name     Week      Overall

Duane    3-4           27-8

Brian       2-5           25-10

Katie       5-2           22-13

Monica  3-4           18-17

It was a bad week for the Crunch staffers outside of Katie who posted the only winning record at 5-2. Monica and I went 3-4 while Brian had a tough week at 2-5. I had only lost four games all year and lost that many in week five, but I was able to add a game to my lead, so it wasn’t all bad.

When it comes to our readers, it was a tough week too as 5-2 was the best they could offer up. Our six readers that went 5-2 were Rob Kimble, Kevin Patterson, Two Chidester, Greg Abel, Zach Davis and Jeremy Harsh but it was Jeremy Harsh that won the tiebreaker for total points of the Utah-WVU game (62) has he selected 55 points so congrats to Jeremy on being our weekly winner. A $20 gift certificate will be heading your way!

You still have time to get your picks in for this week as we accept them until Friday at 6:59 p.m. prior to the high school kickoffs (One submission only). Please click here to make your picks this week.
