Basketball ‘Cats drop 101-83 road decision to Yellow Jackets

INSTITUTE — West Virginia Wesleyan went on the road Monday evening for a postponed game from Saturday night to play West Virginia State University in Institute. The Yellow Jackets won the game 101-83.

On the scoreboard, the Bobcats played even in the first half with the lead changing seven times in the first 20 minutes of play and the teams hit the locker rooms with State up just two points, 42-40.

But several things came apart in the second half, the most notable: personal fouls. The Bobcats sent State to the stripe 13 times and the Yellow Jackets hit every free throw, going 25-of-25 for the half and 37-of-39 for the game. Wesleyan, in comparison, managed just 13-of-19 free throws for the game.

Senior guard Alex Mirhosseini, who is averaging 17 points-per-game and is seventh in the Mountain East Conference in scoring, racked up 31 points (his second highest total of the season), four assists and five rebounds and had a solid performance from the line, hitting 9-of-10 free throws.

Junior forward Alex Gray put up his best performance of the year with 20 points, three assists and nine rebounds. Michael Batchelor contributed nine points, two assists and two rebounds.

The Yellow Jackets had four players score in double digits including Jae Slack with 25 points, Ju’Juan Ray with 16 points, Nate Mims with 11 points, and Aymeric Toussaint with 11 points.

Wesleyan hosts Frostburg State University Wednesday, Jan. 22, at the Rockefeller Center. Tip is 7:30 p.m. and admission is free.
