B-U’s Shreve wins Big 10 Conference Championship; team earns runner-up honors

CLARKSBURG – Buckhannon-Upshur’s Samantha Shreve is a champion after winning the Big 10 Conference title at the conference championship meet last Thursday at Robert C. Byrd high school.

Shreve won the conference title easily with a time of 20:44.09, a good 25 seconds ahead of runner-up Taylor Hess of North Marion (21:11.50).

Shreve defeated 71 other runners and is currently the top runner in Class AAA according to the RunWV power rankings.

For her efforts, she was named First Team All-Conference.

“Samantha was able to capture her first conference title in dominant fashion,” stated Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Taylor Stacy. “She has now earned all-conference honors all three years of running.”

Shreve helped the Lady Bucs to a second-place finish out of nine teams with 95 points.

Preston won the team title with 32 points while Elkins was third behind the Lady Bucs with 98 points.

B-U’s Mia Sappey had a top 20 finish to earn Second Team honors with a time of 23:05.62.

The rest of the B-U line-up were Angelina Winter in 27th (23:05.62), Anya Morehead in 28th (24:19.72), Mallory Moss in 34th (24:53.72) and Pressley Bowers in 41st (25:31.88).

“The conference meet was a really good time for our team.” stated Stacy. “Next week brings on regionals where we hope to earn some spots for states.”

The Lady Bucs will run in the Region I Championships on Thursday in Wheeling.

A Salem woman was trapped in her vehicle and had to be extricated after a two-vehicle crash on Route 33 north of the Huddle House. Police say a truck driver attempting to cross lanes to turn left was cited for failing to yield.
