Randolph County woman arrested for felony shoplifting at Walmart Sunday

Winning

BUCKHANNON – A Randolph County woman was arrested after allegedly attempting to shoplift from Walmart over the weekend.

Cheyenne Winning, 27, of Montrose, was arrested for shoplifting third offense, a felony, on Sunday.

According to the criminal complaint in the Upshur County Magistrate Clerk’s Office filed by investigating officer Patrolman Angel McCauley with the Buckhannon Police Department, on Sunday, Oct. 6, McCauley responded to a complaint of a shoplifter fleeing from Walmart.

McCauley apprehended Winning beside Tudor’s Biscuit World and took her back to Walmart, the file says.

The asset protection associate at Walmart said a woman with “merchandise on top of her purse” had been spotted, and soon after, the woman allegedly concealed it. Once the woman, later identified as Winning, passed all points of sale and began to exit the grocery side, she was stopped by the asset protection associate.

Once the associate walked Winning back to the site-to-store location, Winning allegedly took the merchandise from her purse and began to run, the file says. The merchandise in Winning’s possession totaled $28.48. Winning has several prior shoplifting convictions in Randolph and Harrison counties, according to the complaint, including the following dates: April 25, 2014, Dec. 1, 2015, June 15, 2017, Sept. 21, 2018 and July 19, 2019.

Magistrate Kay Hurst set Winning’s bail at $5,000 cash or surety.

The penalty for a conviction of third-offense shoplifting is a fine of not less than $500 but nor more than $5,000 and confinement in the state penitentiary for a term of one to 10 years. According to state code, at least one year shall be spent in confinement, subject to probation.
